Musket room! o Musket room!! how I adore thee and what you do with food and wine! We didn’t just eat incredibly good food, we drank some darn good glasses of wine! Today, my knowledge on wines, particularly, new world[1] wines has increased and my palate broadened. I am humbled and a bit regretful that I did not take enough photos of the wine! Can’t be blamed though, was too busy enjoying the food!

Starting with powhiri (introduction) of 3 appetizers – smoked cheese, croquette and tart. Let me just say this, when we tucked into these we knew! we just knew that we were in for an absolute treat! The smoked cheese was probably the woodiest tasting cheese I have ever had, and the croquette was beef croquette Yep, like I said, a TREAT!

For Kaimona (sea food) we were presented with a variety but the hen yolk dish? Wow! It was a yolk served in a caviar (yes, folks’ caviar) sauce. The yolk was in the middle of all this caviar goodness and it tasted decadent! The diver scallop tasted so fresh I was reminded of warmer days. The papatuanuku had us sampling dishes from the land – quail, Veal and New Zealand beef.

I loved the no fuss theme of the courses – the quail was just the quail (cooked to perfection by the way) with sauce and onions and DONE!  Nothing extra to detract from the star – the quail, like it is said, less is MORE people! Ranginui (food from the sky) were dessert dishes because ‘dessert is the celebration of the heavens’ ain’t that the truth! The desserts were beautiful, I mean they looked so pretty on the plates and yes, each taste was intense and so scrumptious. A slice of heaven indeed!

Musket room, every dish with the wine pairing was distinct and paid homage to New Zealand. It was such a beautiful journey through sea, land & sky. An extra special shout out to Mr Brett Feroe, the sommelier with the mostest! We will be checking out your recommendations on sourcing the illest wines from New Zealand. Kia Mihi for the take away box of sweets.

p.s one time for Neal, who actually did take photos of the wines!!!!

[1] New world wines are wines from relatively new vineyards / regions like New Zealand, Australia and manufacturing methods are less traditional
